Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult Review
There's a few things that I want to say before I start the review.
First, I'm happy that Jodi Picoult wrote this book.
Second, I respectfully disagree with her notion that people are racist without knowing it.
With that out of the way, I love hated this book, I hated how radical all the characters were. I know, people are like that in real life. There are extreme racists like Adisa and Britt, there are normal people like Kennedy who get shamed for not being biased one way or the other and then change their mind to go with whatever makes them look good, and then there are people like Ruth and Turk that literally go where their life takes them.
Kennedy was not a racist, I don't get what made her a racist other than being white? I think it was highly unnecessary to have Kennedy call herself a racist (but Jodi Picoult called herself a racist in the authors note so that's probably why). I don't Jodi or Kennedy are racists but that's just me.
The story is beautiful but there were some problems that I had with it. Particularly the hospital's way of handling the whole thing, normally hospitals would not allow a patient to deny a nurse because of race. That's an HR nightmare and doesn't happen in normal hospitals. Of course, I also had the problem with some people being racist without knowing it.
It bothered me to the point of wanting to stop reading the book but I really wanted to see Ruth get justice. I am satisfied with the ending, it wouldn't happen that way in real life but in an ideal world it would. The racism infuriated me and I had to see Ruth get her justice. It was just the parts where literally every white person in this whole book was some kind of racist, when it isn't like that in real life.
Otherwise, the book was really good and I definitely recommend it.
Grand Verdict: Annoying in some ways but otherwise amazing
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
